If it were real I would be a proud, card carrying member of Automobile University. However it isn’t a real thing so the best I can do is brag about being a member with Audible. Motivational speaker and wonderful story teller Zig Ziglar coined the phrase “Automobile University” which to me means utilizing your commute for listening to audio books, pod casts, or other educational programs designed to let you expand your mind while driving. You might laugh at me when you consider I have a 5-7 commute to and from work, kids activities, and church… but that adds up to hours of listening time each month, and at least 12-20 books “read” each year.

An additional bonus, for me at least, is as you listen in various places (car, work, behind the lawn mower, on a bicycle) you make little memories.

  • I learned from Diane Ravitch while refreshing the computers at Kalamazoo Christian.

  • I heard the story of Steve Jobs and the founding of Harvest Bible Chapel while white knuckling the drive to and from work while I lived in Kalamazoo and worked in Holland.

  • I listened to the stories of SEAL training and the lessons learned by Jocko and Leif while delivering luggage to Chicago for friends.

  • The kids and I have listened to Harry Potter stories on family trips.

  • I even learned about Strong Fathers and Strong Daughters on our recent Spring Break Trip. Nebraska never sounded so good.

So hey, if you want to learn something new and don’t know how you’re going to do it… try Audible and go for a drive… it’s cheaper than a real university education ;).
