Ten Year Swing

There will be an agreement in whatever variety of actions, so they be each honest and natural in their hour. – Ralph Waldo Emerson

What would you say to the person you were five years ago? What will you say to the person you’ll be in five years?

(Author: Corbett Barr)

To the person I knew five years ago:

  • Spend the money and buy Google. Even at its IPO it is a bargain. You should probably buy Apple too.

  • Don't invest in GM.... bad choice.

  • Enjoy the time you have alone with your wife, it ends soon and is as enjoyable, just different.

  • Start reading your Bible.

  • After you finish the half marathon, don't stop running. Make the time to exercise.

  • Shifting to Google Apps at work was a good idea.

  • Get certified.

To the person I will be in five years:

  • Know your Bible.

  • Learn to market items, yourself, and make it a career.

  • Keep sharing time and experiences with your family.

  • Don't stop caring.

  • Twitter isn't a fad, right?

  • You're welcome.

Dare to Be Bold

Our arts, our occupations, our marriages, our religion, we have not chosen, but society has chosen for us. We are parlour soldiers. We shun the rugged battle of fate, where strength is born. – Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Next to Resistance, rational thought is the artist or entrepreneurs worst enemy. Bad things happen when we employ rational thought, because rational thought comes from the ego. Instead, we want to work from the Self, that is, from instinct and intuition, from the unconscious.

A child has no trouble believing the unbelievable, nor does the genius or the madman. Its only you and I, with our big brains and our tiny hearts, who doubt and overthink and hesitate.” - Steven Pressfield, Do the Work

The idea of “being realistic” holds all of us back. From starting a business or quitting a job to dating someone who may not be our type or moving to a new place – getting “real” often means putting your dreams on hold.

Today, let’s take a step away from rational thought and dare to be bold. What’s one thing you’ve always wanted to accomplish but have been afraid to pursue? Write it down. Also write down the obstacles in your way of reaching your goal. Finally, write down a tangible plan to overcome each obstacle.

The only thing left is to, you know, actually go make it happen. What are you waiting for?

(Author: Matt Cheuvront)

The one thing I've always wanted to accomplish, but have yet to do, is start my own profitable business and be my own boss.

The obstacles, or should I say perceived obstacles to reaching this accomplishment include:

  • Choosing just what in the world I actually want to do

  • Money

  • Family

  • Fear of failure

  • Time

  • Resources

Steps to reach this goal... you know I actually think I want to do marketing/consulting and in the process try to avoid being the kind people hate. So tangible steps...

  1. Find a client who wants me to do work and do it pro bono. There is no way I get paid work without a degree and I'll eat soap before I get a marketing degree - not because I hate education, but because I think it would taint my creativity. I'd much rather learn the ropes the hard way then get some cookie cutter education that qualifies me to be like everyone else.

  2. Develop a workflow for this client to engage with customers or potential customers. I think the basic concept would be build friendships first, then worry about the money.

  3. Show off my successful work and start getting paying clients.

  4. Rinse and repeat.

When written this way it is quite obvious. I need to do this within my own school. If I can show that this place is needed, and the tuition is worth paying, then I think I've got something.

The To Start List

Life wastes itself while we are preparing to live. – Ralph Waldo Emerson

If you had one week left to live, would you still be doing what you’re doing now? In what areas of your life are you preparing to live? Take them off your To Do list and add them to a To Stop list. Resolve to only do what makes you come alive.

Bonus: How can your goals improve the present and not keep you in a perpetual “always something better” spiral?

(Author: Jonathan Mead)

1. Start enjoying things more often and stop worrying about work when I'm not there.
2. Start talking more often in meeting. Even if my ideas suck I need to share them,
3. Start providing true customer service to people. Service first, show people I care.
4. Start working only on projects that make a difference, then ship.
5. Read more.

Greece

If we live truly, we shall see truly. - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Not everyone wants to travel the world, but most people can identify at least one place in the world they’d like to visit before they die. Where is that place for you, and what will you do to make sure you get there?

(Author: Chris Guillebeau)

I'm torn. I'd love to visit the Alps and spend days skiing the mountains. I also love my wife and she doesn't ski and I'm just not sure I could get away to Switzerland or Austria without her. So before I die I would like to take my wife to Greece. I just think the country looks beautiful and the design and architecture is appealing to me. If I bought a lotto ticket and won I could probably just buy a Greek Island given their current financial crisis... but that's not really a great plan.

Instead, and I feel lame for saying this, I think I'll just save my pennies and keep working towards finding a job that I like, and that can provide for a family trip to Greece somday.

Maybe I can see some of you there.
